Bingo's origins date back to Italy in the early
16th century, an Italian lottery played every
Saturday. It spread through Europe before making
it to the United States centuries later.
Played in America since the early 1900s, Bingo
started out stateside as a county fair game
called Beano. Numbered discs from a cigar box were
called out, and players would mark the numbers on
their cards with beans. When someone got a row of
numbers, they would call out "Beano!" The name
changed when someone accidentally called out
"Bingo"
instead.
